Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Tara Morrissey, Intern – Human Resources, who sits in the Ambler office, to learn more about her role, how she discovered Berkadia, and how her passion for DEIB in the workplace.
Describe your internship at Berkadia, what department you’re in and how you’re liking the program so far.
I am the BELONG intern for the DEIB team under Rodolfo Lopez. This program is a well-oiled machine that has opened doors for me to meet and learn from all different types of people. In my role, I’m responsible for developing training, organizing DEIB initiatives, offering DEIB ideas, and assessing the maturity of HR and DEIB.
If you’ve had other internships, how does Berkadia’s internship program differ?
In my last internship, there was no formal indoctrination, long-term onboarding or learning event series. The way Berkadia’s internship program is set up, you get to learn the ins and outs of the industry from the people who are key partners, as well as the people who support those business lines.
Aside from meeting with key players of the industry and learning about CRE in practice, Berkadia, and my manager specifically, does an incredible job of sponsoring their interns. We are given work that is meaningful to the organization and opportunities to showcase what we have learned and produced to our team.
What is your major in school and how did you find out about Berkadia?
I currently attend West Chester University working towards my Master of Arts in Industrial/Organization Psychology, human behavior at work, and my concentrations include psychological safety, change management, and my personal favorite, DEIB.
I found out about Berkadia through my very impressive, intelligent and empathetic cousin, Maura Spellman. Maura told me all about the learning opportunities she has had here at Berkadia and the ways Berkadia invests in their employees.
I grew up surrounded by CRE brokers and financial analysts. My mom, dad, brother and multiple cousins have worked in the industry and were always eager to share their excitement. Being able to combine my passion for DEIB and CRE was a no brainer.
What stood out about Berkadia when you were interviewing for your internship role?
Everyone that was involved in the recruiting process impressed me with their warmth and excitement around this new territory they were exploring with DEIB. From my first interview, I felt that my opinion was valued, and that theme has continued throughout my stay at Berkadia.
How can other students prepare themselves to land an internship at Berkadia?
Learn how to brag about yourself. The chances are that you are impressive, so highlight your accomplishments, what makes you different and how you can bring people together.
I would also advise others to talk to as many people as you can; everyone knows something that you don’t.
What has your internship at Berkadia taught you about your future career or yourself?
Creating a welcoming environment is not enough, we need to invest in programs and build processes so we can embed a sustainably equitable space that allows us to bring our authentic selves to work.
